Certified Angus Beef Hoping to Continue Steady Growth in 2012
Thu, 01 Dec 2011 12:51:45 CST
The Certified Angus Beef program has seen a constant growth over the past five years with increased sales and an increase in cattle that qualify for the program. Ron Hays talked with Steve Suther with the Certified Angus Beef program about the increase in interest in CAB over the years, how it is affecting the producer, and what they are looking forward to in 2012.

Suther says that the Certified Angus Beef program has kept a record of promises over the past 33 years. When a customer tries CAB beef, Suther says they keep returning because they don't want to return to a lower quality beef and have a good eating experience.
The interest in higher quality beef is also moving over to big retailers. With Wal-Mart coming in line as well, there has been a stimulation in the marketplace to really differentiate between select and choic or premium choice beef products. Suther says this is making it more and more worthwhile for producers to orient their programs toward getting the CAB product.
As the CAB looks to 2012, Suther says one of their biggest goals is to sell one billion pounds of product. Suther adds that they also want to increase the number of high percentage Angus cattle and have the right kind of high percentage cattle with a choice-select spread.
