Pawnee Team from the Northeast District Takes First in Livestock Handling Competition
Fri, 09 Dec 2011 16:58:33 CST
The Livestock Handling Contest was held at the Tulsa Farm Show today to help teach youth in agriculture how to properly handle and manage livestock while providing vaccinations and other types of handling. American Farmers and Ranchers are a sponsor of the contest and AFR President Terry Detrick says contests like this are important to the future of agriculture.
Contestants were judged on skill, accuracy, excellence and efficiency as they sort and process animals through a chute. In addition to scholarships, the winning team will receive a Priefert calf table to take back to their agricultural education program and a trophy buckle.
The top three teams this year were: First place-Pawnee Northeast with members J.D. Steele, Chase Collins, and Macey Skidgel; Second place-Porter Northeast with members K.C. Barnes, Hallie Barnes, and Jarrod McKinney; and Third place-Pawnee Southeast at Large with members Hayden Skidgel, Morgan Vance, and Chrissie Collins.
Detrick adds that each of these competitors must complete a written test before performing the handling part of the contest. This emphasizes an application of classroom study and knowledge to a real world, agricultural situation.
