Students from Okeene Elementary School were awarded a special appearance by St. Louis Rams player and Bethany native Chris Chamberlain recently as Dairy MAX winners of Fuel Up to Play 60's local "Show Your Spirit Challenge."
The Show Your School Spirit Challenge encouraged students to get everyone excited about making healthy food choices and being physically active, then upload a video, photo or essay that demonstrated how they enacted the Challenge. Fourth grade students at Okeene Elementary created a video "Road to Success" to highlight their commitment to be healthy and to "Fuel up to Play 60."

Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program created in partnership the National Dairy Council, Dairy MAX and the National Football League in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture that encourages students to eat healthy, be active and implement positive, healthy changes at school. This program reaches more than 1,000 schools in Oklahoma with Fuel Up to Play 60 grant funds.
Okeene received $4,000 in FUTP 60 funds to assist their efforts at learning more about and choosing healthier foods. They purchased Coordinated Approach to Children's Health guidebooks, sent a teacher to training, bought P.E. equipment, and have purchased healthy foods for the children to sample in the classroom. They also produced a handout for parents.
There were a series of five Fuel Up to Play 60 Challenges for students to participate in throughout the year. Each challenge focused on a different aspect of the program and provided the opportunity for students to collaborate with their peers to showcase what they have learned about "fueling up" with nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and "playing" for at least 60 minutes every day.
Melissa Powell, Okeene Elementary Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor and School Nurse from the County Health Department said, "I'm so proud of their creativity and determination. These kids wanted to spread the message of good nutrition and fitness and this Fuel Up to Play 60 Challenge inspired them."
During a school assembly, Okeene fourth grade students asked questions of NFL player Chris Chamberlain, which they developed during a class assignment, and all students got involved by taking a Fuel Up to Play 60 activity break. Cheerleaders, PE teachers, Child Nutrition, School Administrators, and other community health professionals attended to show their support.
