Senator Jim Inhofe to Address Oklahoma Peanut Expo March 16th
Thu, 08 Mar 2012 15:49:16 CST
Senator Jim Inhofe is scheduled to address peanut producers from across the state during the 2012 Oklahoma Peanut Expo. The one day event is slated for Friday, March 16 at the Quartz Mountain Resort near Lone Wolf
The annual event, a collaborative effort of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission (OPC), Oklahoma State University and peanut sheller interests in the southwest, has become the state's premier industry meeting drawing participants from across the southern peanut belt.
After a record-setting year of weather and markets, many peanut producers are reflecting upon last year and hoping 2012 weather conditions are much improved as they make plans for spring planting just ahead. "There is no better way to start planning than by attending the Expo," says Joe D. White, OPC chairman. "The program is timely and the topics targeted to address current issues important to our producers."
"We are especially pleased to include a Town Hall meeting with U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe," said White. "As ranking member of the Environment & Public Works Committee, he should present a lively conversation regarding regulatory concerns often voiced by agriculture."
Other program highlights include promotion updates, the peanut marketing outlook, production tips on variety selection, disease and weed control and the latest on field technology. The program concludes with the unveiling of a national peanut revenue protection proposal. Revenue insurance has never been available for peanuts.
The 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. event is open to everyone with an interest in peanuts. Expo registration, which includes lunch, is free and opens at 9 a.m. An exhibit area will provide opportunities for farmers to visit with input suppliers throughout the day.
At the conclusion of the conference, producers from Beckham, Custer, Dewey, Ellis, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Kiowa, Roger Mills, Tillman and Washita counties will caucus to nominate four peanut farmers: two of whom will be appointed by Gov. Mary Fallin to serve three-year terms representing District 3 on the Oklahoma Peanut Commission, effective July 1. Current commissioners, Joe D. White of Frederick and Les Crall of Weatherford, are eligible for nomination.
