Oklahoma Ag Day Celebration at the Capitol Coming Up April 5th
The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry (ODAFF) will host its annual celebration of agriculture, Ag Day at the Capitol, to be held April 5 at the state capitol in Oklahoma City.

On the fourth floor rotunda, agriculture commodity groups and Made In Oklahoma companies will have displays and be available to answer questions about their products from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The mini-fair showcasing the state's agricultural products is free and open to the public. More than 30 vendors will show a variety of items including lavender oil from Lavender Valley Acres near Apache, Dreamcatcher Farms Salsa from Edmond and peanuts from Lasley Family Farm in Eakly.

Each year, ODAFF oversees the selection of an individual who has been a leader in the agriculture industry. The person selected is given the Governor's Outstanding Achievement Award in Agriculture and is then inducted into the Agriculture Hall of Fame.

Nominations were sought earlier this year for the governor's award. To be qualified, a person must have served the industry for more than 25 years, been a leader in his or her field, exemplified innovation and accomplishment in agriculture and acted as a role model. ODAFF will announce the 2012 Agriculture Hall of Fame inductee at 1:00 p.m. in the Blue Room at the capitol. The public is welcome to attend.

The Ag in the Classroom (AITC) coordinators will recognize student-winners in the statewide AITC contest including categories for poster, story board, bulletin board, essay and video. Secretary of Agriculture Jim Reese, the Oklahoma Beef Council and state legislators will honor the winners. They will also recognize the AITC Teacher of the Year for 2012, Shirley Lettkeman, fourth-grade gifted education teacher from Watonga Elementary School. The awards will be presented beginning at 10 a.m. in the Supreme Court Hallway on the second floor.
