Tue, 10 Apr 2012 18:05:50 CDT
The Round Barn of Arcadia, located on historic Route 66, will celebrate its 20th anniversary April 14 at 10 a.m. The celebration will include comments from Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb, Rep. Lewis Moore and Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer for the Oklahoma Historical Society Melvena Heisch. The public is invited to tour the barn, participate in a Route 66 "Cruise-In" for classic and antique cars, see the Model T display, enjoy live entertainment, a square-dancing exhibition and more.
The Round Barn of Arcadia has a long, colorful history in Oklahoma County. It was a mainstay along Route 66 when the Mother Road was the best way to get from Chicago to Los Angeles. Originally constructed in 1898 by William and Myra Odor, the barn was used for livestock and other agricultural purposes before being renovated in 1992 by Luke Robison and the "Over-the-Hill" gang. Robison and others volunteered their time and resources to restore the barn.
The Round Barn is one of many venues in the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry's agritourism program. The Oklahoma Agritourism Program is the crossroads where agriculture and tourism meet. Farms, ranches and vineyards across Oklahoma are opening their gates, barn doors and fences, issuing a heartfelt invitation to sample the abundant bounty and natural beauty found in the state's growing adventure - agritourism. With more than 500 events and destinations featured, there's plenty to fill a weekend getaway or weeklong vacation. In 2010, domestic travelers directly spent nearly $6.2 billion in Oklahoma. Agritourism contributes to rural economic development in communities across the state.
In 2011, The Round Barn documented more than 31,000 visitors including travelers from 57 countries. Supported by donations only, The Round Barn is a museum and event facility just 20 miles northeast of Oklahoma City in Arcadia, the gateway to the Oklahoma City metro. The Round Barn is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
