NACD Applauds Senate Passage of the 2012 Farm Bill, Calls on House to Follow Senate's Lead

NACD applauds the U.S. Senate for its passage of a bipartisan, common-sense, fiscally responsible Farm Bill. The 2012 Farm Bill, as passed by the Senate, includes a strong Conservation Title that streamlines and consolidates programs for increased efficiency and ease-of-use for producers, while maintaining critical funding for all of the conservation purposes needed to implement conservation where it counts.
"This is truly a reform bill, with benefits stretching far beyond rural America," said Gene Schmidt, NACD President and seed farmer from Hanna, Ind. "The Farm Bill impacts everything from food security, to the economy, and to the conservation of the land, air and water we rely on every day."
NACD worked closely with the Senate Agriculture Committee throughout the 2012 Farm Bill process, and appreciates the opportunity to provide input on behalf of America's network of conservation districts.
"We are now calling on the U.S. House of Representatives to follow the Senate's lead in passing a bill that fairly recognizes the critical role of locally-led conservation in protecting and preserving America's natural resources at the landscape scale," Schmidt said. "A strong investment in conservation today will help avoid escalated costs for repair in the future. As we face increased pressure to produce food, feed, fuel and fiber for a growing population, we simply can't afford not to invest in our natural resource base."
