In this week's beef report, according to Ed Czerwien, USDA Market News Office in Amarillo, Texas, we saw the choice cut market end the week June 2, 2012, at $197.25 cwt, $2.36 higher than the previous week. The total spot volume for the choice was 852 loads during the holiday shortened week. It appeared beef sales were better than anticipated for the Memorial Day holiday with retailers restocking their shelves. However, the total loads, choice, selects, trims and grinds was less than the previous week.
The general trend in the finished cattle trade was mostly steady with live sales in the South at $121 cwt. Dressed sales in the North were steady to two dollars higher at mostly $195 cwt.
The average live weight from the Texas Panhandle was 1,236 pounds, three pounds heavier than the previous week.
