Class XVI of the Oklahoma Ag Leadership Program Named by OSU
Tue, 24 Jul 2012 03:40:01 CDT
Class sixteen of the Oklahoma Ag Leadership Program has been announced by Oklahoma State University. OALP is a two year work-study leadership development program that was established in the early 1980s to further develop future leaders for Oklahoma agriculture. Class One of the OALP was established with help from a grant from the Kellogg Foundation. All Classes since that time have been funded by private contributions from individuals and organizations, support from the Oklahoma Legislature, Oklahoma State University Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and participation fees from class participants. (Pictured here are some of the members of Class XIV during one of their seminars)
During the two year program, a number of two to three day seminars make up the backbone of the curriculum. Areas studied include leadership development; communication; government operations and institutions; economics, resource allocation, marketing and finance problems in agriculture; sociology; and religious and cultural studies. The major issues that affect Oklahoma and US agriculture will be studied. These include the political process, international trade, water and energy. Seminars are held in Stillwater, Oklahoma City and at key locations across the state to further help the class members understand all of the many aspects of agriculture in the state.
Year One of the Program concludes with a National Work Study Experience to Washington and nearby areas to enhance the understanding by the class of the political process at the National level. The capstone experience of the program comes at the end of year two, with an international travel experience that is unique to that class to offer them an international perspective of how Oklahoma agriculture fits into the global marketplace. Previous classes have traveled to Asia, Europe, Australia, the Americas and Africa to stretch their understanding of agriculture and the challenge of feeding a growing worldwide population.
The first session for Class XVI is in August on campus at Oklahoma State University, with the international travel experience to a location yet to be determined for this class and graduation from the program to come in the spring of 2014.
OALP now claims over 400 graduates since the inception of the program, with those graduates stepping up in the leadership of a large number of organizations at the local, state and national level over the past thirty years. To learn more about the OALP, click here for the Program's website.
Ron Hays, a graduate of Class One of the Program, has traveled with several of the classes overseas, and reported along the route taken by Class XV earlier this year to Scotland and Ireland. Click here to see the RON coverage of OALP into those countries this past February by clicking here.
