Tue, 04 Sep 2012 12:54:56 CDT
The first qualifier for the 2013 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship (WLAC) will be hosted by Mid America Stockyards in Bristow, Okla. (36970 W Hwy 16, Bristow, Okla.) on September 15, beginning at 9:00 a.m. (CT). The event will be the first of three qualifiers and will begin the 50th year of the WLAC, hosted by the Livestock Marketing Association (LMA).
The public is invited to attend the competition to watch contestants show off their auctioneering chants. The competition will be held during the regularly scheduled sale, with live bidders on the seats.
Jerry and Helen Varner own Mid America Stockyards, which has been a family operation since February of 1970. Today, four generations of the Varner family assist with the weekly livestock auction. "The entire family is really excited to host the first 2013 WLAC Qualifier," says daughter-in-law Melody Varner.
During the competition, each contestant will auction cattle and be judged on the clarity of their auction chant, vocal quality, ability to catch bids and conduct the sale, if the judge would hire the auctioneer for their own livestock market, and whether this person would make a good spokesperson for the industry. Judges are livestock market owners and members of LMA.
The following 21 contestants from across the United States will compete in the first qualifier: Chris Arnaman, Mo.; Mitch Barthel, Minn.; Jeff Bynam, Ala.; Colvin Connell, N.M.; Mike Godberson, Okla.; Brandon Hinz, Okla.; Kyle Layman, Va.; Blaine Lotz, Kan.; Kevin Magby, Okla.; Mike "Hoss" Manske, Okla.; Andrew McDowell, Ill.; Justin Mebane, Calif.; Ashley Noland, Texas; Barry C. Robinson, Ga.; Lane Rodman, Okla.; Jay Romine, Ky.; Jason Santomaso, Colo.; Russele Sleep, Iowa; Preston Smith, Kan.; Tracy Sullivan, Okla.; and Billy Younkin, Ala.
The top 10 auctioneers at the Bristow event will earn a place in the semi-finals at the 2013 WLAC, hosted by Montgomery Stockyards, LLC, in Montgomery, Ala., on June 14-15. Winners will receive thousands of dollars in prizes and the champion spends their year as a spokesperson for the industry.
All qualifying contests and the WLAC will be broadcast live at www.LMAAuctions.com.
The next chance to qualify for a spot in the 2013 WLAC will be at Southeast Mississippi Livestock AAL in Hattiesburg, Miss., on September 24, 2012. The final opportunity to qualify will come at Stockland Livestock Auction, Inc., in Davenport, Wash., on October 29. Registration is still open for the qualifier in Davenport until September 26 at www.LMAweb.com.
