In The Field: Frank Lucas Talks About the 2012 Farm Bill--The Clock is Ticking
Sat, 08 Sep 2012 13:10:28 CDT
Congress will return to Washington this week for the last eight legislative days before the end of September and the expiration of the current farm bill. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R-OK) spoke with Ron Hays on "In the Field" about his game plan for advancing the 2012 Farm Bill
Lucas says the main problem will be generating enough enthusiasm among the leadership to move the bill forward. He said there are a number of pressing issues facing Congress including passing a continuing resolution to fund government operations and the looming 'fiscal cliff,' which may prove a distraction. He also says the coming election and the potential for gridlock during a lame-duck session is very real.
If the full 2012 Farm Bill is not passed by the September 30th deadline, Lucas said there are several options being floated by various members to pass an extension of the current farm bill at least until a new Congress is seated in January.
