OSU's Garey Fox Receives National Educator Award
Oklahoma State University's Garey E. Fox has been named the 2012 recipient of the A.W. Farrall Young Educator Award by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

The ASABE award - named in honor of longtime Michigan State University Agricultural Engineer A.W. Farrall - recognizes outstanding success in motivating others to apply engineering principles to solve problems relative to agricultural endeavors.

"Garey truly understands how to motivate students and others he works with to achieve their best," said Dan Thomas, head of OSU's department of biosystems and agricultural engineering. "He has an incredibly inquisitive mind that is continually delving into the fundamental processes about how things work, such as stream bank erosion. His ability to transfer those inquisitive traits to freshmen and graduate students alike makes him an extremely effective educator."

An associate professor and holder of OSU's Orville L. and Helen L. Buchanan Endowed Chair in the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Fox is considered one of the rising stars among soil and water engineers at land-grant institutions across the United States.

Since joining the OSU biosystems and agricultural engineering faculty in 2006, Fox has been instrumental in garnering more than 25 grants - an almost unheard of number in so short a time period - from federal, state and university sources. He has served as lead investigator on 19 of those grants, and also on three U.S. Department of Agriculture National Research Initiative grants.

A 15-year member of ASABE, Fox is active in the society's soil and water division committees. ASABE is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food and biological systems. It boasts approximately 9,000 members, hailing from more than 100 countries.

Fox is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Soil Science Society of America.

He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&M University in 1998 and 2000, respectively. Fox earned his doctoral degree from Colorado State University in 2003. Before coming to OSU, Fox served as a faculty member at the University of Mississippi.
