Environmental, Animal Rights, and Religious Groups Oppose Farm Bill Provisions
Wed, 12 Sep 2012 13:00:13 CDT
Thirty environmental, health, religious, and labor organizations sent the following letter to House lawmakers urging them to strongly oppose provisions in the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2012 (FARRM) that they claim will increase hunger, harm the environment and animal welfare, and eliminate health protections:
September 12, 2012
Dear Representative:
Our organizations strongly oppose provisions of H.R. 6083, the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2012 that increase hunger, harm the environment and animal welfare, and eliminate long-standing health protections. In the absence of dramatic changes through a full and open debate, H.R. 6083 should be rejected by the full House.
As written, H.R. 6083 would end feeding assistance to millions of Americans at a time of rising food prices. It weakens or eliminates federal food and farm reviews and safeguards. It seeks to rob states of their long-standing right to set standards for food safety and farm production. It does nothing to improve the nutritional health of the nation. H.R. 6083 also cripples popular environmental programs, includes harmful rollbacks to environmental and health laws, and fails to make environmental protection a condition of receiving subsidies.
Our nation needs a farm bill that feeds the hungry, improves public health, protects the environment, and enhances animal welfare. Unfortunately, H.R. 6083 feeds fewer people, favors the largest farm businesses, and undermines critical consumer, environmental, animal welfare, and public health protections. We urge you to reject H.R. 6083, as currently drafted.
