The Jury is Out- Latest 2013 Canola Pictures
Wed, 09 Jan 2013 06:53:38 CST
Canola farmers have a lot of concerns about the crop they planted in late September and early October of this past fall. The pictures here are of a field that is located in northeastern Canadian County- just off of State Highway 3. These pictures were taken on Tuesday aftermoon, January 8, 2013. While canola can tolerate cold conditions- the question remains- can a field like this one bounce back and produce an average yield this coming June?
Canola crop watches like OSU's Josh Bushong and PCOM's Heath Sanders say don't give up on the crop at this point. The key will be rainfall to recharge the soil moisture profile so that the crop will be able to draw upon that moisture when it begins growing again in the latter part of February or very early March.
On the last day of 2012- the Oklahoma office of NASS reported that 65% of the Oklahoma Canola crop was rated in poor to very poor condition as we prepared to start 2013. Without significant rainfall (or snow), the prospects for fields like this one remain bleak. Clearly, the jury is out- but checking the forecast for rain on a daily basis.
