Weldon Wynn Says Cattlemen's Beef Promotion Board has Done Well With Checkoff Dollars

Weldon Wynn says that one of the biggest challenges facing the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion Board is trying to do more with fewer Beef Checkoff dollars than ever before. He is the vice chairman of the CBPB and recently spoke with RON's Farm Director Ron Hays at the 2013 American Farm Bureau Convention and Trade Show about how his organization has managed to do more with less.

"We've done that and done it well. Our staffs work on that daily and we're going to have to continue to do better at that. But we do need to look at, you know, if you've got more money you can do many things. We've got different folks that are trying their hardest to make sure that the checkoff dollar is spent as wisely as it possibly can. You know for sure that our advertising dollar has dropped quite a bit, but we're doing it in different ways. And we've got companies that are working with us that are taking up the slack."

He says despite the tight economy and the need to stretch dollars as far as they can go, there are some real checkoff success stories, especially overseas.

"The export market is really, really working in our country. The top of my list is that. The next thing is that we're coming out with new research. Research in the cattle industry, education and research, are where it's at. You have to have that. The consumer today, more so than I have ever seen-and I've got a lot of years in this-they're more interested in what we're doing, and the way we're doing it, and how it's going to benefit them, if it's healthy. And this is what we're spending our dollars on."

Wynn has spoken with a large number of beef producers at the AFBF convention and they have a lot of questions and offer a lot of support to the checkoff program.

"They're wondering if we're doing good or if we're not. Ninety-nine percent of them say that they're pleased with the checkoff. They want to make sure that they're contributing something that the consumer then will be benefiting from. The older folks, the younger folks that are in this cattle industry, they want to see this thing progress and progress well. And this is the way we've got to do it is through the checkoff."

The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the region on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
