Registration Now Open for Specialty Crops Workshop to be Held February 27th
Agricultural producers interested in possibly taking advantage of crops that can be grown commercially but do not require hundreds of acres can register now to attend the Feb. 27 Specialty Crops Workshop in Rose.

"There are a number of crops well-suited to small-scale commercial production in Oklahoma and the region," said Jim Shrefler, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension area horticulture specialist. "To be effective, though, a grower needs to be knowledgeable. Think of the workshop as one-stop shopping that provides participants with the necessary information to get up and running."

The Wednesday 9 a.m. to mid-afternoon workshop will take place at Neng Thao's farm, located at 5684 U.S. Highway 412 near Rose. From Highway 412 E - the Cherokee Turnpike - take the Leach/Rose exit. Turn right on Scenic Alternate 412 and proceed toward Leach for 3.5 miles. Take the first driveway on the north past S 540 Rd. If driving from the direction of the community of Kansas, Okla., go west on Scenic Alternate highway 412 for 6.6 miles, and then take the first driveway on the north side of the road past the Leach Baptist Church. The farm is located just west of the Warren Livestock Auction.

There is no cost to attend, and lunch and refreshments will be provided. Participants are asked to pre-register by contacting Jennifer Jensen, OSU Cooperative Extension risk management education assistant, by phone at 405-744-9826 or by email at jennifer.jensen@okstate.edu, Participants also can contact Cee Cha, a local Rose producer, by phone at 720-331-5839 or by email at ntziacha@yahoo.com.

"Pre-registration helps us ensure that sufficient numbers of lunches, refreshments and workshop materials are on hand so that every participant has the best possible experience," Jensen said.

Presentations will be held both indoors and in the field, with an emphasis on helping producers to identify and manage production, legal and marketing aspects of specialty crops.

"Diversification of crops can be a valuable risk management tool," Jensen said. "Attending the workshop is an investment; it allows producers to check out various possibilities that might potentially strengthen their agricultural operation, and do so in one trip."Session topics will focus on ground and soil preparation, risk management and crop insurance, water sampling, planting demos and row covers.

The workshop is sponsored by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency and Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

Information is available by contacting Jensen by email at jennifer.jensen@okstate.edu.
