Five-State Women in Agriculture Conference Scheduled at PSU

Wed, 13 Feb 2013 16:17:50 CST

Five-State Women in Agriculture Conference Scheduled at PSU
The 3rd annual 5-State Women in Agriculture Conference will take place Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Science and Agriculture Building on the campus of Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell.

Arleen James, Texas County Extension Educator, said the emphasis of the seminar is to provide information and insights useful to women who are involved in agriculture through either farming or ranching. Sessions will emphasize how women can better manage risk on the family farm, ranch, and/or small business. Both breakout and general sessions will be led by experts from industry and government agencies, including Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Food and Forestry, and Farm Service Agency.

On-site registration begins at 8 a.m. Sessions will start at 9 a.m. and run through mid-afternoon. Cost is $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Contact the Texas County Extension office at 580-338-7300 for reservations.

"We ask participants to pre-register if possible because it really aids in our planning and helps ensure that we have sufficient numbers of meals, refreshments and conference materials on hand," James said.

Brent Howard, southwest Oklahoma estate and tax attorney, will kick off the event with an Estate Planning general session. Brent will explain what women and agricultural families need to know about passing on the family estate.

Following the general session, participants will have an opportunity to choose from a variety of breakout session topics of their choice, or areas they may need strengthening in. Sessions will focus on insurance, farm loans and FSA programs, agritourism, and agricultural issues. "Dana Bessinger of the Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom program also will share practical tips about the best ways to teach agriculture to children," James said.

Back by popular demand, Matt Rush, a 5th generation New Mexico family farmer and rancher, will provide the luncheon keynote address. "There never has been, nor be, a story that I love to tell more than that of American agriculture. I'm proud to tell people that I'm doing the same thing that my grandfather's grandfather did and we're better now than we've ever been!" Rush said. The first speech Rush ever gave was the FFA Creed, where he ended up winning second in the state and his first "Blue and Gold" jacket. Since that time, he's gone on to win numerous awards and has traveled nationally and internationally motivating, entertaining and inspiring his audiences.

New to this year's conference is an opportunity to visit the mini-mall, which will feature jewelry, candles barn wood items, and much more. Items will be available for purchase from local vendors. The conference will conclude with local entertainment and door prizes will be awarded.

The OPSU Ag and Science Building is located at 47 W, Sewell Street in Goodwell.

Additional information about the seminar is available from Arleen James at 580-338-7300.
