Fri, 08 Mar 2013 13:02:06 CST
The Oklahoma Pork Congress is scheduled for Friday, March 15, at the Reed Center in Midwest City. More than 150 pork producers, allied industry members and guests will meet for updates, programs, lunch, awards banquet, business meeting as well as silent and live auctions.
The day will begin at 10 a.m. with an update from the National Pork Producers Council, and the National Pork Board. After the national updates about the industry, Dr. Michelle Calvo-Lorenzo plans to introduce herself to the okPORK members as the Livestock Well-Being and Environmental Management Specialist recently hired in the Oklahoma State University Department of Animal Science. Her discussion will include her ideas for research projects and what she hopes to accomplish in her new position.
During lunch, okPORK's 2013 Oklahoma Environmental Steward winner will be announced and celebrated.
Following lunch, okPORK's Executive Director will provide an update for all members. Directly following okPORK's update McSpadden & Associates will lead attendees through a discussion on the current legislative session and the effect it could have on Oklahoma's pork industry. The okPORK membership also will hold its annual business meeting and elect members to the okPORK Board of Directors.
At 4 p.m. Dr. Jayson Lusk will present a keynote speech entitled, "The Evolution of the Pork Industry and the Rise of Consumer Activism." Lusk is a professor at Oklahoma State University and holds the Willard Sparks Endowed Chair in the Agricultural Economics department. His knowledge and realistic approach to dealing with the modern food systems in the United States made him the ideal candidate to speak at this year's Pork Congress.
The evening will continue with a reception during which attendees will have the opportunity to raise funds through the okPORK silent auction. The Awards Banquet will begin at 6:15 p.m. During the banquet Phil Richardson will be inducted into the okPORK Hall of Fame and Bart McSpadden will receive okPORK's Distinguished Service Award. In addition, okPORK plans to honor Sen. Ron Justice as the 2013 Outstanding Legislator and QC Supply of Holdenville will be commended as the 2013 okPORK Ambassador. The evening will end with a live auction.
