Tue, 02 Apr 2013 10:55:26 CDT
Ed Czerwien, USDA Market News, Amarillo, Texas, files this report for boxed beef trade ending March 30, 2013:
The daily spot Choice boxed beef cutout ended the week at 189.05 which was almost $2.38 lower on 1,002 loads of daily spot beef reported. This is the first time in several weeks that choice cutout broke the 1,000-load barrier, but it was still only 14 percent of the total sales for the week.
The Comprehensive Choice cutout, which is the weekly average of all types of sales (including the spot trade, formula trade, and out-front trade, etc,) was at 192.45, which was $4.06 lower than last week.
The total reported Box Beef volume was 7,160 loads which was 909 loads better than last week.
The formula trade was 3,064 loads for the week, which was about the same as last week and about 43 percent of the total sales.
The out-front sales were better and more like last year with 1,320 loads which was 403 loads better than the previous week.
Exports reported 991 loads which was 245 loads better than the previous week and NAFTA exports represented 205 of those loads with 786 loads going overse
The most recent 10 week rolling boxed beef sales average was 6,606 loads per week which compares to almost 7,246 loads per week last year at this same time. That is 640 loads less than last year's weekly average. That's about 38,000 fewer head of cattle sold each week for 10 weeks in a row compared to last year.
The Primal cut trade portion of the spot trade was weaker last week. The outside primal cuts, the rounds and chucks, were steady to $3 to $9 lower. The middle meats, the ribs and loins, were mostly steady to $5 lower, except for choice loins which were up to $4 higher.
The cow cutout ended the week steady with trading range of about $1 for the entire month of March .
