Tyler Schnaithman of Garber Wins Three Speech Divisions- Plus State CDE Winner List

Ahead of the 2013 Oklahoma FFA Convention that begins on Tuesday in downtown Oklahoma City, over 2,500 members in their Blue and Gold jackets competed in the state speech and career development events on the campus of Oklahoma State University this past Friday and Saturday. Leading the way was a high school senior from Garber High School, Tyler Schnaithman. Schnaithman competed in three state speech contests- and swept all three- the first time that has ever been accomplished by one student in one season. Pictured here with the hardware he picked up Friday night for his performance, Tyler won in Plant Science, Agricultural Policy and Extemporaneous. The Extemporaneous is a category which automatically qualifies him a spot in a national contest next fall at the 2013 national convention in Louisville, Kentucky, while he will be competing in the Prepared Speech finals on Tuesday at 12:30 pm. Schnaithman has elected to present his Plant Sciences speech instead of Ag Policy, as a speaker is only elgible to compete in one category in the state finals.

More than 10,000 Oklahoma FFA members representing 352 high school chapters across the state are expected to attend the 87th Annual State FFA Convention, April 30-May 1, at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City. This year's convention theme is Grow. Growing as an individual and leader is an important component of FFA. By exercising exceptional leadership skills, FFA members discover the significance of being a good role model, and most importantly, serving others. Through agricultural education and FFA, these young people are realizing the true power of growing as a leader.
The state FFA convention is the culmination of the year's activities for FFA members. It is an opportunity for individual awards and recognition, delegate business, officer elections, and a celebration of chapter accomplishments. The Oklahoma FFA Foundation has raised approximately $560,000 this year from sponsors who will provide cash awards, scholarships, plaques and honor banquets to award winners and degree recipients. Title sponsors of the convention are Blue & Gold Sausage Company, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, Devon Energy Corporation, McDonald's, SandRidge Energy, Farm Credit of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Ford Dealers.
The state FFA officers, a team of eight student leaders, plan the convention and conduct the official ceremonies. The 2012-2013 state FFA officers are Brandon Baumgarten, president, Oilton; Alex Cash, secretary, Owasso; Kaylen Baker, reporter, Yukon; Kyle Hilbert, northeast district vice president, Depew; Annie Jo Gilbert, central district vice president, Choctaw; Barrett Powell, Ringwood; Steven Vekony, southeast district vice president, Byng; and Kelsie Williams, southwest district vice president, Hollis.
