Kentucky Farm Girl Turned National FFA Officer Challeges Oklahoma FFA to Grow Like That

Joenelle Futrell got involved in FFA a little later than many of her fellow members did- joining her sophomore year at Daviess County High School in the western part of the state of Kentucky. As the years went by, her involvement and leadership roles increased, and this past October, the University of Kentucky junior was named the 2012-2013 National Eastern Region Vice President during the FFA national convention in Indianapolis.

Futrell joined five others on the national officer team and has completed about half of her magic carpet ride year, as each National officer will cover more than 120,000 miles traveling some 300 days to promote FFA, interact with students and engage top leaders in business, government and education. The national officers will lead personal growth and leadership training seminars for FFA members and also help set policies that will guide the future of FFA and promote agricultural literacy.

This week- she was the national officer that was selected to experience the 87th annual Oklahoma FFA convention and Career Show in downtown Oklahoma City- she tells Farm Director Ron Hays that this is her fist time in Oklahoma- but she has felt very much at home in the state since arriving.

Futrell will have a busy Wednesday before leaving the state, as she speaks and offers her take on the Convention theme, FFA- Grow Like That!- to the Wednesday morning general session audience. Following that appearance, she will lead a workshop that will explore how young people can make a difference in the battle against hunger here in America.

Futrell talked with Hays about her FFA career, her year thus far as a national officer and what she believes she will take with her later in 2013 as she ends her years wearing the Blue and Gold jacket.
