Wheat Growers Are Encouraged by Farm Bill Proposed by Chairwoman Stabenow

Thu, 09 May 2013 19:51:07 CDT

Wheat Growers Are Encouraged by Farm Bill Proposed by Chairwoman Stabenow On Thursday, the Senate Ag Committee's Chairman, Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, released her draft proposal for the 2013 Farm Bill, which will be the starting point for the Committee's Mark Up session planned for next Tuesday, May 14, 2013. Click here for the complete draft proposal from Chairwoman Stabenow.

Following the release of the proposal by the Senate Ag Committee- the following statement was released from National Association of Wheat Growers President Bing Von Bergen, a wheat farmer from Moccasin, Mont.:

"On behalf of wheat growers across the country, the National Association of Wheat Growers applauds Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Ranking Member Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) for their work on the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2013.

"We commend the Committee for producing a bill that will provide wheat farmers with a strong safety net through Title I programs and crop insurance and that addresses important provisions with regards to conservation, research, food aid, marketing and nutrition. The bill would also reduce our country's deficit by roughly $23 billion over 10 years while supporting millions of jobs throughout the economy.

"NAWG believes it is vital for wheat farmers and our economy to finish a long-term farm bill this year, before the existing farm bill extension expires. We look forward to working with Committee Members as they prepare for their mark-up next week and urge quick consideration of the Ag Committee's product on the Senate floor."
