EWG Applauds House Farm Bill Failure
Thu, 20 Jun 2013 18:45:01 CDT
Scott Faber, EWG's Senior Vice President for Government Affairs, released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives failed to pass a federal farm bill.
"The full House was right to reject a bloated farm bill that increases subsidies for the largest and most successful farm businesses, while needlessly cutting programs designed to help feed the hungry and protect the environment by $20 billion and $5 billion, respectively. Many lawmakers simply couldn't support a bill that lacked real reforms, such as limits on crop insurance subsidies, increased transparency, and basic environmental protections in exchange for taxpayer-funded support. This should be a wake up call to lawmakers to produce a farm safety net that is equitable, fiscally responsible, and protects our food, family farms, and the environment."
