Mon, 29 Jul 2013 10:29:52 CDT
Known statewide for its outstanding youth program, American Farmers & Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union (AFR/OFU) provides leadership development and professional growth opportunities to hundreds of the state's future leaders. One such future leader is Bailey Kliewer of Thomas, currently serving as the AFR/OFU 2013 Summer Intern.
The AFR/OFU Youth Program focuses on students grades 1-12 and has rejuvenated its summer youth internship program in an effort to provide further opportunities for its brightest stars. As the initial torch-bearer of the revived program, Kliewer was selected based on her superb leadership skills, strong desire to work with Oklahoma youth and diverse agricultural and educational experience.
"Bailey is a shining star among the young people of Oklahoma," said AFR/OFU President Terry Detrick. "We are blessed to have her on our team and proud to support her as she grows into one of our state's greatest leaders and supporters of youth."
This summer, Kliewer will work side-by-side with AFR/OFU Youth & Education Coordinator Lin Fariss, providing essential support for many program events throughout the summer. She will also be a key contributor in the effort to improve the overall impact of the AFR/OFU Youth Program.
As one of her primary responsibilities, Kliewer will help coordinate, plan and facilitate the annual AFR/OFU Leadership Summit. The annual retreat develops leadership skills in junior high and high school youth, such as setting and achieving short- and long-term goals and working in teams. Through the event, Kliewer will have a significant, direct impact on the lives of more than 150 youth.
Kliewer is a former attendee of the Summit. She grew up participating in programs designed to help young people succeed and has seen firsthand how these programs can impact young lives.
"I consider serving young people, especially those in agriculture, one of my most important responsibilities," Kliewer said. "I am grateful for the opportunity to work with AFR/OFU. This is just one step toward serving Oklahoma's youth and I am excited for what the future holds."
The daughter of Justin and Mary Kliewer, Bailey grew up in a Vo-Ag family and has been active in agricultural programs throughout her life. As a junior agricultural education major at Oklahoma State University, she plans to remain involved with her two main passions youth and agriculture.
The AFR/OFU Youth Intern Program is intended to bridge the gap between the organization's high school youth and college students who are interested in youth education. AFR/OFU provides the youth of Oklahoma varied opportunities to develop into the leaders of tomorrow the organization hosts an agricultural achievement contest, fall speech contests, statewide scholarships, livestock handling and skills contests, a summer leadership summit, livestock judging and grading competitions and many other leadership opportunities.
