Drought Conditions Continue Improvment, Could Stabilize Through January
Thu, 17 Oct 2013 09:13:06 CDT
Oklahoma residents living east of Love County saw a further reduction of drought conditions last week, according to Associate State Climatologist Gary McManus. Rains across much of the state, with particularly heavy totals in the southeast, helped improve the state's moisture profile.
The weekly Drought Monitor map should improve into next week, McManus said, because significant rains continued to fall past the Tuesday cutoff.
Some rain is expected in northwest Oklahoma, but they will also have a chance for a freeze.
McManus said that long-term climate prospects for the state show the probability of above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall in the November-January time frame. He said the U.S. Seasonal Drought Outlook, however, doesn't show a worsening of drought conditions during the period because water stress will be low. If the state receives anywhere near normal precipitation levels during the period, drought conditions could even improve.
