Rancher Starts Heifers for South Dakota Project to Help Ranchers Rebuild Herds
Thu, 17 Oct 2013 14:56:24 CDT
A blizzard two weeks ago killed thousands of head of cattle in parts of South Dakota, putting the future of many ranchers in jeopardy. As clean-up efforts continue, people outside the region are asking how they might help.
Montana rancher Ty Linger has come up with a project to help called Heifers for South Dakota. He tells Radio Oklahoma Network's Ron Hays he wanted to be able to provide quality-bred females or heifers to any rancher who was seriously affected by the storm.
"We're wanting to reach out to young ranching couples or individuals just getting started. We wanted to donate cattle to people saying, 'You know what? We made it through the storm and we're going to keep going.'"
For those who would like to help in this herd rebuilding project, Linger set up a website: http://helpforsouthdakota.com/
He says there are currently several ways that people can help, with a number of groups collecting money and holding auctions to raise funds for distribution to those hit hardest by the storm. He says Heifers for South Dakota is doing something a little more unique: they are collecting cattle.
But they're not collecting just any cattle, Linger says.
"Our stipulation is if it would be something you would be proud to own, we'll take them. Our challenge is to give the best you have. We want to give a good gift to these folks."
