Oklahoma Pork Council Joins Fight Against Hunger, Feeds Hungry Oklahomans this Holiday Season
Thu, 17 Oct 2013 16:19:29 CDT
Thanks to the Oklahoma Pork Council (OPC) and Blue and Gold Sausage, 4,000 pounds of sausage, valued at $8,000, will be donated to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
"Oklahoma's pork producers are proud to partner with the Regional Food Bank again this year to make sure hungry Oklahomans have access to high-quality, nutritious protein," said Roy Lee Lindsey, Oklahoma Pork Council executive director. "The Regional Food Bank plays a central role in directly helping tens of thousands of hungry citizens in our state and Oklahoma's pork producers look forward to helping in that effort each year."
The donation from okPORK and Blue and Gold Sausage is a part Governor Mary Fallin's Fourth Annual Feeding Oklahoma Food Drive. The goal of the drive is to raise 1.4 million meals to help feed hungry families, children and seniors this holiday season.
"Blue and Gold Sausage is proud to play a part in this donation again in 2013," said Brett Ramsey. "Blue and Gold Sausage Company was founded with the idea of helping our local communities and organizations. Supporting the Regional Food Bank and feeding hungry Oklahomans certainly continues that mission."
The Regional Food Bank provides enough food to help feed more than 90,000 people each week. Yet, it is not enough to keep up with increased demands.
"It's no secret that Oklahoma's strong agricultural sector helps feed the world, but there are still many of our neighbors who don't have enough to feed their families every day," said Bas Werner, okPORK president and pork producer from Kingfisher, Okla. "We work very hard to produce high-quality pork right here in Oklahoma, and it's very special to be able to partner with the Food Bank to help out thousands of our fellow citizens in need."
Donations of pork, and other high-protein foods, are especially valuable to the Regional Food Bank because they provide healthy, nutritious options to hungry Oklahomans.
The Feeding Oklahoma Food Drive runs through Oct. 31. For a complete list of participating businesses, or to make a monetary donation online, visit www.feedoklahoma.org . All donations are tax deductible and will benefit hungry Oklahomans.
