Higher Placements May Be Seen in December 20th Cattle on Feed Report

Wed, 18 Dec 2013 07:54:41 CST

Higher Placements May Be Seen in December 20th Cattle on Feed Report This coming Friday- December 20, 2013- will have the US Department of Agriculture releasing their final Cattle on Feed report of the year.

Rich Nelson, Chief Strategist with Allendale believes that the report will give us higher placements, lower marketings and a lower on feed number compared to December first of last year.

Specifically- Nelson reports via email that:

"November Placements are expected to be 3.8% higher than last year. The winding down of this year's grass season and sharply lower grain prices encouraged cattle feeders. Corn averaged $4.32 in Western Kansas that month ($4.46 in October, $7.62 in Nov 2012). November placements are marketed from April through August. We see extremely small cattle slaughter in February and March due to low May through September placements. There will be adequate numbers available for late spring and summer.

"Allendale anticipates a Marketing total 4.7% lower than November of 2012. There was a calendar day adjustment this month of 3.9%.

"Total Cattle on Feed as of December 1 will be 4.3% smaller than last year. This would be larger than the November 1 survey which showed 5.7% fewer cattle."

Also coming from USDA will be the final Cold Storage report of 2013- that to come out next Monday- December 23. Of that report, Nelson says "Allendale projects a 564 million lb. total pork stock level for the end of November. The five year average is 506 million lbs. for the end of November. Our estimate represents a decrease of 3 million lb. from the previous month. The five year average month to month change for November is a 17 million lb. decrease. Beef stocks, at 451 million lbs., are above the five year average of 447. This month's number represents a 7 million lb. increase from the previous month. The five year average change is a 15 million lb. increase."

The Cattle on Feed report will be released on Friday, December 20 at 2:00 PM central time, while the Cold Storage Report will be released Monday, December 23, also at 2 Pm central time.
