Registration Now Open for Youth Forestry Camp
Are you ready for a unique summer camp adventure in the forest? Oklahoma Forestry Services is offering teens the opportunity to learn more about the forest while exploring Oklahoma's natural resources in beautiful Beavers Bend State Park at its 58th Annual Youth Forestry Camp.

"Catching Fire" is this year's theme, with campers learning about fire ecology and how fire affects the forest's ecosystem. Hands-on activities with natural resource professionals will include wildlife management, forestry management, stream ecology, and fire management. These professionals, who represent organizations such as Oklahoma Dept. of Wildlife Conservation, Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Dept., OSU Kiamichi Forestry Research Station, Lower Mountain Fork River Foundation and Weyerhaeuser Company, will also discuss career opportunities with the teens. Other programs during the weeklong camp will include tree identification, GPS exploration, forest measurements and soil investigations. Naturally, there is time every day for recreational activities such as swimming, hiking, canoeing, archery and fishing, and meeting new friends while enjoying one of Oklahoma's most spectacular places.

"The kids always have a great time and learn so much at camp," said Oklahoma Forestry Services Education Coordinator Jerí Irby, "but what is really great is that they gain a lifelong awareness and respect for their environment."

The week-long camp will be held June 2 - 7 and is open to boys and girls ages 13 -15 from across the state. The fee for campers is $175 and covers all costs, including lodging, meals, transportation at camp, field trips and workshops. A limited number of partial scholarships are available.

Apply now for this extraordinary outdoor experience at www.forestry.ok.gov/forestycamp. The website also has additional camp information and photos from previous camps. Applications will be accepted until May 16th. You are also welcome to contact Jerí Irby at 405-522-6160 or jeri.irby@ag.ok.gov.

Camp counselors and adult leaders are also urged to apply. Camp counselors, age 18-22 should be mature, responsible young adults with an interest in education or outdoor career such as forestry or wildlife. In addition to gaining valuable field experience, camp counselors will receive a stipend of $200 for the week. Volunteer adult leaders are eligible to bring one camper for no charge.
