OYE Steer Judge Jack Ward Talks The Right Kind of Steer and the Right Kind of Kids at 2014 OYE
Fri, 21 Mar 2014 06:44:16 CDT
Jack Ward has a day job- serving as the COO and the Director for Breed Improvement for the American Hereford Association. However, he also has a passion that he gets to do on a regular basis as well- serving as a judge for many of the major junior livestock shows around the country. Ward had been scheduled to be the Steer judge for the 2015 Oklahoma Youth Expo (and still will be) but a last minute cancellation by the judge lined up to work the 2014 OYE prompted a call to Jack Ward on Monday of this week- he accepted and Thursday evening was busy selecting the 2014 Grand Champion of the Oklahoma Youth Expo.
Ward had fewer animals to sort than the judges of the other market species that are a part of the OYE- but the Grand Champion Steer clearly is the headliner of the show, as well as the Sale of Champions- so there is a certain amount of pressure to pick wisely. Before the Grand Champion drive on Thursday, we talked with him about what he looks for in a top steer, his thoughts on how the market steers shown at places like OYE intersect with the goal of producing beef for the consumer and also a discussion of the lessons learned by 4-H and FFA members as they prepare and then show their animals at events like the OYE.
His comments about the youth show circuit are today's Beef Buzz.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the region on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well. Pictures of all of the action over the course of the OYE thus far can be found in the photo set for the 2014 Oklahoma Youth Expo we have set up on FLICKR- Click here to go and check out our growing number of pictures in our 2014 collection.
