Grand Champion Market Steer at 2014 OYE Commands Record $73,000

The Sale of Champions at the 2014 Oklahoma Youth Expo had strong support from the state's business community, farm organizations, Indian tribes and even individuals- and that support added up to a record of more than $950,000 in gross receipts for the 210 animals that were a part of the sale. Those dollars were on top of market value of the animals in this premium sale. For the 2014 Grand Champion Steer- the final bid was a OYE Record $73,000 for owner Madison Hudgins of Mannford FFA. The group of buyers that purchased the top market Steer sold on Friday afternoon includes Livestock Nutrition Center, McAfee & Taft, Alan Niemann, Bank of Western Oklahoma, Hartzog, Conger, Carson & Neville, Harold and Jennifer Callahan, Chain Land and Cattle Company, Robyn Printing, Tener's, Cusack Meats, Loveless Custom Bootss and Friends of Madison Hudgins. The previous high price for a steer at the Oklahoma Youth Expo was $62,000 paid in 2013.

The Reserve Grand Champion Steer for 2014 was shown by Ryan Callahan of the Edmond 4-H. Callahan saw his 2014 Reserve Champion Steer bring $35,000. Among the buyers for the Reserve Steer were Express Ranches, Farm Credit and First Liberty Bank. The Bronze Medallion Barrow was shown Macy Starks of Cherokee FFA- the third highest placing Steer in the OYE for 2014 brought $11,000.

Here are the details of the 2014 Oklahoma Youth Expo Market Steer Show- as reported earlier in our Blue Green Gzaette:

****************************

Of the thousands of market animals that were exhibited by their young 4-H and FFA owners this week at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, it all came down to the final handful of top animals that were in the hunt for the Grand Championship for their species. For the Market Steers- the best of best was shown by 17 year old Madison Hudgins of the Mannford FFA Chapter. Madison told us in comments that you can hear by clicking on the LISTEN BAR at the bottom of this story that this was only the second time she had "made the sale" at the Oklahoma Youth Expo. She says her steer's name is "KD" which stands for Kevin Durant- the star of the Oklahoma City Thunder. KD was the Champion Crossbred steer that won that part of the 2014 Market Steer show just hours earlier on Thursday.

The Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer was shown by Ryan Callahan of the Edmond 4-H club- his Reserve Grand was named the Champion Charolais steer earlier in the week.

Hudgins and Callahan will join about 200 other 4-H and FFA members who will be able to say "I made the sale" as they will help headline the Sale of Champions on Friday afternoon at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, beginning at 4 PM.

Pictures of all of the action over the course of the OYE thus far can be found in the photo set for the 2014 Oklahoma Youth Expo we have set up on FLICKR- Click here to go and check out our growing number of pictures in our 2014 collection.
