Oklahoma Peanut Expo Set for March 21
Wed, 12 Mar 2014 11:27:07 CDT
Peanut producers from across the state will gather Friday, March 21 for the 2014 Oklahoma Peanut Expo at Quartz Mountain Resort near Lone Wolf. The annual event, a collaborative effort of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission, Oklahoma State University, USDA/ARS and Peanut Sheller interests in the Southwest, has become the state's premier industry meeting drawing participants from across the southern U.S. peanut belt.
"The Expo topics are targeted to address current issues important to our producers," says Joe D. White, Peanut Commission chairman and peanut producer from Frederick. "As producers, we must be aware of the various factors that may influence our success, whether it be markets, farm policy, production decisions, or even wild hogs. There is no better way to become informed than by attending the Oklahoma Peanut Expo."
Headlining this year's conference will be Third District Congressman Frank Lucas, Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture. "With the recent passage of the Agricultural Act of 2014, operating under new farm policy will be key for our producers going forward," said White. "Having the Chairman address our group will set the stage for an outstanding program. We'll offer a double shot on farm policy with Bart Fischer, Chief Economist for the House Ag Committee, walking us through the weeds, so to speak, on Title I and Crop Insurance provisions."
Other program highlights include the peanut marketing outlook, peanut variety advances, disease and weed management, promotion updates and some novel techniques for wild hog control. The 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. event is open to everyone with an interest in peanuts. Expo registration, which includes lunch, is free and opens at 9 a.m. An exhibit area will provide opportunities for farmers to visit with input suppliers during the day.
A special luncheon caucus will be held for producers from all counties adjoining and east of I-35 to elect two peanut farmers to serve a three-year term, from District 1 on the Oklahoma Peanut Commission, effective July 1. Current Commissioners, Anthony Reed of Thackerville and Mike Mayes of Leon, are eligible for nomination.
