Purebred Gilt Show Judge Shane Brinning Finds One in a Thousand
Sat, 15 Mar 2014 13:15:25 CDT
Shane Brinning, along with his sift judge Tim Marek, had a tough job on the opening day of competition at the 2014 Oklahoma Youth Expo- they were looking for one in a thousand. And after fourteen hours of looking at almost a thousand purebred gilts- they found her. Brinning told the audience that he felt the gilt that was "the one" for the 2014 show was the Champion Hampshire shown by 4-Her Gavin Seibold of Cement.
After selecting the Reserve Supreme Champion Purebred Gilt- the Yorkshire Champion, we talked for a few moments with Brinning about his day and what he had been looking for. The Iowa hog producer says that he was looking for several things including "Hogs that are wide and are square, hogs that have function and hogs that have a skeleton under their skin that can handle the mass above."
And while he was looking for that perfect gilt that could produce a meaty set of piglets in the near future- he was also observing the young men and ladies that were pordding and pushing and guiding the gilts around during the show- and he called the exhibitors awesome- "it's fun to come out and analyze the livestock but then to see the quality of kids that we are raising- it makes you realize that the vehicle that we are using with pigs to promote our kids is an awesome thing."
