Wheat Harvest Gaining Speed as Combines Roll In Southern and Central Oklahoma- Audio Added

The 2014 wheat harvest is starting to pick up across the state of Oklahoma, with the USDA reporting that six percent of the crop has been harvested as of June first- versus a five year average by this date of 20% completed. Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Assistant Farm Director Leslie Smith talked with Mike Schulte of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission about harvest conditions as he was preparing to release the Wheat Commission's June second wheat harvest report- you can hear Mike's comments with Leslie by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.
What follows is the report released on Monday afternoon, June 2, 2014 by Schulte and the Oklahoma Wheat Commission:
Harvest is starting to roll in the Southern and Central regions of the state with test weights better than anticipated. Yields are right in line with USDA predictions so far to this point. Although the wheat is not ready to harvest in Northern regions of the state, heavy rains did land in many parts of Northern Oklahoma over the past 24 hours. In Cherokee, Oklahoma some areas received over 3 inches of moisture while other parts received over 1 inch of moisture. While many do not want to turn the rain away producers are hopeful they can get good weather the next few days so harvest will move forward.
Hollis- No grain has been taken in as of today; but hopefully, this afternoon harvest will get started.
Frederick-Harvest has started rolling in this region over the past weekend. Production is somewhat better than anticipated on the wheat that is being harvested. Test weights have been ranging from 58 to 62 lbs. with a favorable average around the 59 to 60 lb. range. Yields are being reported from 11 to 18 bushels per acre. Proteins reported to be averaging around 12 to 14 percent.
Chattanooga- Yields have been reported in the 10 to 12 bushel range. Test weight has been ranging mostly from 58 to 59 lbs. a few lower weights being reported. Overall quality and kernel color looks favorable.
Grandfield- Yields being reported around the 10 to 15 bushel range. Test weights coming in at 58 to 59 lbs.
Hobart- Prospects in this area are looking more favorable than anticipated. Harvest started rolling on Saturday and combines have been moving at full speed. Yields in this area are reported from 15-20 bushels per acre. Test weight average in this area is favorable with a 60 lb. average. Some reports of test weights as high as 62 lbs. Kernel size on the grain is a little smaller, but overall color and quality looks favorable. Protein averages reported to be high with a 12 to 13 average.
Clinton-Two grain samples have been brought in this afternoon with averages of 11.7 to 13.4 moisture. Producers are hopeful to start harvest in this region today.
Sentinel-Harvest is just getting started in this region. Moisture is running at 12.7 to 13 percent with the wheat that is coming in around 60 to 62 lbs. for test weight. Kernel color and quality looks favorable. Reports so far have come in with yields being around 17 to 18 bushels per acre.
Rocky- No loads have been taken in at this location but they are hopeful harvest will start this afternoon.
Apache-The first load of wheat was taken in this area this morning. Moisture was 12 percent with a test weight of 60 lbs. No yield data was reported
Kingfisher-Wheat harvest began in this region for some producers on Friday and harvest is just getting started good in this area today. Moisture on the wheat has been running 11.5 to 12.5 percent on that being harvested. Test weights reported at 60 to 62 lbs per bushel. Kernel size is somewhat smaller however color looks favorable. Protein is averaging 12 to 14 percent. Yields averaging 20 bushels per acre.
Omega- Moisture on the wheat has been running 11.5 to 13 percent on that being harvested. Test weights reported at 60 to 62 lbs per bushel. Kernel size is somewhat smaller however color looks favorable. Protein is averaging 12 to 14 percent. Yields averaging 20 bushels per acre.
Reeding- Moisture on the wheat has been running 11.5 to 12 percent on that being harvested. Test weights reported at 60 to 62 lbs per bushel. Kernel color and quality looks favorable, but kernel size is again somewhat smaller. Protein is averaging 12 to 14 percent. Yields averaging 15 to 20 bushels per acre.
Okeene- The first load of wheat was taken in over the weekend. Test weight was 58 lbs. no moisture or yield average was reported. It is anticipated harvest will pick up in this region mid-week.
