Winter Time is Tree Planting Time
Wed, 12 Nov 2014 11:39:00 CST
With the chilly temperatures outside, now is the perfect time to order tree seedlings and shrubs for planting on your property. The Oklahoma Forestry Services (OFS) nursery is taking orders now for seedlings that are specifically selected to thrive in Oklahoma's harsh climate.
"Oklahoma's seedling planting season runs from December through early April and fall is the best time to prepare the planting site to make the planting job easier," said State Forester George Geissler. "Getting your trees in the ground while they are dormant is critical to their survivability next summer."
For those landowners needing help, OFS foresters assist landowners to plan for, plant and care for trees on their property no matter how large or small the acreage. Landowners can even rent a mechanized tree planter for $25 per day to assist with large plantings.
The OFS nursery located south of Norman grows over 30 types of trees and shrubs from local seed sources. Back this year are baldcypress, chokecherry, and northern red oak. Millions of native trees and shrubs grown at the nursery are shipped to all corners of the state each year.
"For the last several years we have sold out of the larger hardwood "super cells" that are well-suited for the landowner who wants to get a quick result by planting a larger more established seedling," said Scott Huff, OFS nursery manager. "Our wildlife packages are also a very popular option for those landowners wanting to attract deer, turkey or songbirds to their property."
Seedlings are bare-root, one or two years old,10-30 inches in height and sold in bundles of 50 per species. Wildlife bundles have 25 seedlings of four different species and are sold as a package of 100. Hardwood "super cells" must be purchased in blocks of 25 per species.
