AFR Women's Committee Plans Canned Food Drive Starting January 19
Thu, 15 Jan 2015 07:44:13 CST
The American Farmers & Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union (AFR/OFU) 2015 Women's Committee and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma have teamed up to host a statewide food drive to help in the battle against hunger. The "Drive Away Hunger with AFR" campaign is a way to challenge AFR/OFU members to donate 50,000 meals throughout 2015, kicking off with the first canned food drive January 19 through January 30.
More than 675,000 Oklahomans struggle with hunger daily, the majority being the working poor, seniors and children, with less than twenty percent considered to be unemployed. One canned food item donated equals just less than one meal per family and $1.00 donated equals up to five meals.
AFR/OFU has asked their agents to be the drop-off point within their community and are offering up a friendly competition for the local organization which donates the most. Winners of the competition will be announced at the 2015 AFR/OFU State Convention held at the Embassy Suites in Norman on Saturday February 14 during the Women's Luncheon. First place will receive $250, second place will receive $150 and third place will receive $100 for their local organization. All donations will be picked up by the local food pantries and dispersed to hungry families within the area.
If you would like to make a donation to the "Drive Away Hunger with AFR" campaign or for more information please contact your local AFR/OFU president and agents, or contact Future Leaders Development Coordinator Megan Albright at (405) 218-5416.
