Sun, 15 Mar 2015 00:18:54 CDT
In the opening competition at the 2015 Oklahoma Youth Expo, close to twelve hundred purebred gilts were judged by Sift Judge Brant Smith and Lead Judge Dr. Mark Hoge- and at the end of the day, they selected the Champion Berkshire Gilt as the Supreme Champion Purebred Gilt. The Berk was shown by Taylor Wolff of the Stroud FFA Chapter(pictured here during the Champion Drive). The Reserve Supreme Champion was the Champion Duroc- shown by Miranda Meadows of the Tecumseh FFA Chapter. The Duroc breed had the largest number of entries that were shown on Friday- with over 500 entered at this year's record breaking Purebred Gilt show.
Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Purebred Judge Mark Hoge at a break between judging breeds on Friday. Dr. Hoge is an Associate Professor at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois- and judges livestock shows across the nation. He raved about both the quality of the gilts he was seeing, about the kids showing them and the incredible numbers of hogs that were a part of the 2015 Oklahoma Youth Expo. He described the hog show at the OYE as perhaps the largest youth livestock show ever seen in the United States. You can hear the conversation that Ron had with Dr. Hoge by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.
Each exhibitor of all Breed Champions and Reserve Champions received a scholarship- $750 for Champions and $500 for Reserve Champions. The Scholarships were made possible by Devon Energy, ADM- Showtec Feeds and the Oklahoma Pork Council.
