Bailey Buck Looks Back at Life Lessons from the OYE Show Ring
Mon, 16 Mar 2015 16:36:54 CDT
Winning at the Oklahoma Youth Expo is a dream for many. As a junior in high school, Bailey Buck had that dream come true when she exhibited the 2010 OYE Grand Champion Steer.
"It was really surreal," Buck said. "I remember in the fourth grade, I wrote down that one of my goals was to win the Oklahoma Youth Expo steer show. The moment it happened it was just like instant tears. It was insane-.I just blacked out, I don't remember really what happened. I was so excited."
Radio Oklahoma Network Farm Director Ron Hays interviewed Buck at the 2015 OYE going on this week at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. Click or tap on the LISTENBAR below to listen to the full interview. Here is a picture of her Grand Champion Steer from 2010.
Today, she is a student at Oklahoma State University and is part of the Oklahoma Agriculture Leadership Encounter or OALE. The program provides leadership and learning for the top ten agriculture students at OSU. She said the group has traveled the state and visited with agricultural businesses that support youth. The group also traveled to the capital to meet and visit with state Senators and Representatives. The group is also involved with all ten days of OYE. Buck said it's a good experience in working with all of the youth. She said this event allows youth to show off their projects.
"I grew up in the livestock industry and I wouldn't be who I am without it, no doubt," Buck said. "It gave me so much responsibility and I met so many people through it, made so many connections that have helped me be successful."
Buck will graduate in December from OSU with a degree in Animal Science. She plans to apply to medical school to become a doctor. She also wants to be involved in agriculture in the future.
