Hallie Barnes of Porter FFA Named 2015 Oklahoma FFA Star in AgriScience

Porter FFA member Hallie Barnes discovered an interest in agricultural-based experiments in her fourth-grade science class, leading her to capture one of Oklahoma FFA's highest honors.

Barnes' devotion to scientific investigation led to her selection as the 2015 State Star in Agriscience. Her supervised agricultural experience project was rated the best agriscience program among the 742 FFA members who received the State FFA Degree during the 89th Oklahoma State FFA Convention in Oklahoma City on April 29. Through her SAE program, Barnes conducted research regarding beef quality assurance concerns for refrigerator temperatures used to store animal health products, such as vaccines and biologicals.

"Cattlemen are usually very good about storing these products in a refrigerator," Barnes said. "However, literature reviews showed a high percent of producers' refrigerators failed to maintain temperature within the safe range of 35-45 F. I found this interesting and decided to conduct my own research."

Throughout her research, Barnes worked with Dr. Tom Troxel, professor of animal science and associate department head at the University of Arkansas, to give herself a foundation for working with large amounts of data and statistical analysis.

"In conducting my experiments, I have become much more familiar with the eight steps of the scientific method," Barnes said. "This experience will help me immensely in my college science classes as an animal science major at Oklahoma State University."

The 18-year-old Porter FFA member is the daughter of Kent and Diana Barnes. Her agricultural education instructor and FFA adviser is Brad Criner.

Along with the State Star honor, Barnes also received the Governor's Trophy and a $1,500 cash award sponsored by The Noble Foundation. The national sponsor for this award is Dupont Co. and CNH Capital.

Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Hallie shortly after the judging of her SAE was complete- and has prepared the following video highlighting her being named as a 2015 Star.
