AFR/OFU President Celebrates Legislative Support of 'Right to Farm'
Thu, 30 Apr 2015 15:43:52 CDT
The head of the American Farmers and Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmer's Union organization commended the efforts of the State Legislature in passing the 'Right to Farm' proposal. President Terry Detrick commended State Representative Scott Biggs and State Senator Jason Smalley for their work and he thanked House and Senate members for the solid vote.
The Oklahoma House of Representatives Wednesday to approve the Senate amendments to HJR 1012, by a vote of 85 to 7. The Senate amended and passed the resolution on April 21st with a vote of 39 to 6. The amendment will go to the vote of the people in November 2016. In having this voted on by the people of Oklahoma, Detrick said this is a real opportunity to inform the state's consumers about where their food comes from.
"It's an opportunity for us to be able to sell the public on the safety and the reasons we have abundant food," Detrick said. "And I just hope we will be able to capitalize on that effectively and turn any kind of negativism into a positive."
By the time this proposal is put on the ballot, Detrick is prepared for those anti-agriculture groups to come against this amendment. Because these groups are well funded, he said Oklahomans will have to stand united, call on constituents and financially get behind the effort for the future of the state's agricultural industry.
"Any money they put into this campaign to help us get this passed is an investment, it's not an expense," Detrick said.
