AFR to Hold Second "Drive Away Hunger" Campaign
Tue, 12 May 2015 10:40:00 CDT
American Farmers & Ranchers Women's Committee is gearing up for the second round of their statewide food drive. Set May 1 June 30 the committee has partnered up with the Invest an Acre and Plant A Row Campaigns through the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma City and the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.
The AFR Women's Committee has committed to a goal for AFR members to donate 50,000 meals throughout 2015, with more than 16,000 meals provided during the first drive held in January. The Invest an Acre program allows farmers to donate an acre, or any portion of crop proceeds, to help feed families in their community and across the state. For every dollar donated through Invest an Acre, Monsanto will match it dollar-for-dollar. The proceeds will assist in providing thousands of healthy meals to the more than 650,000 Oklahomans who are at risk of hunger daily.
For those members who are not in grain production, but are looking for a way to support the Oklahoma Food Banks other than by donating canned goods or cash, there is the Plant A Row campaign. Plant A Row is a people-helping-people program encouraging members to go to their local nursery, garden supply store or other retailer and either purchase seed packets to donate or ask the retailers to donate any unsold seed packets, which will be given to the local food banks. Gardeners who have old seed packages can donate those as well. Both Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma and Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma work to provide starter plants for community gardens across the state. The donated seeds will be used for the community garden projects. Members are also encouraged to plant a little extra in their gardens and donate the abundance to a food pantry in their community.
One in six Oklahomans struggle with hunger every day. Last year the Oklahoma Food Banks distributed enough food to feed more than 160,000 hungry Oklahomans each week, however it is not enough. Join AFR in fighting hunger in Oklahoma.
