NCFC President and CEO Chuck Conner on House Passage of the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 15:18:11 CDT

NCFC President and CEO Chuck Conner on House Passage of the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Statement by National Council of Farmer Cooperatives President and CEO Chuck Conner on House Passage of the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act

"Today's House passage of H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, is a victory for American consumers, farmers and cooperatives. The strong bipartisan vote today shows the broad based support for ensuring a consistent, national standard for labeling foods containing genetically modified (GMO) ingredients.

"Under this bill, consumers will have more choices in the supermarket aisle and farmers will have new opportunities to develop new market segments. In addition, everyone in the food and agriculture value chain from farmer to consumer will have the dependability and assurance offered by a federal framework. There would be no danger of a 50-state, crazy quilt patchwork of labeling regulations.

"Growers and farmer co-ops across the U.S. have embraced biotechnology as a way to increase yields in an environmentally and economically sustainable way; we only have to look to the drought of two years ago to see the benefits that many of these crops provide. With a world population headed to 9 billion people by 2050, GMO crops will play a key role in feeding the future. This bill represents an important step in cutting through the misinformation about GMOs and instead focuses on the science attesting to their safety and the benefits these crops provide.

"Our focus now turns to the Senate. NCFC looks forward to working with the many friends of agriculture in that body to see similar legislation taken up in the near term."
