Talking PASS with the New Department Head for Plant and Soil Science at OSU- Dr. Jeff Edwards
Wed, 30 Dec 2015 04:21:07 CST
The new head of the Plant and Soil Science Department in the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University is a familiar name and face to many in Oklahoma agriculture- former OSU Small Grains Specialist Dr. Jeff Edwards. Dr. Edwards took over PASS leadership earlier in 2015- and now leads one of the key departments for farmers on the Stillwater campus and at key research and extension locations around the state.
On the overview page of the PASS website, Dr. Edwards writes that "at the heart of agriculture is plant and soil science. Crop production, biotechnology, natural resources conservation, and biofuels are just a few of the critical areas of agriculture where we have very strong programs in teaching, research, and extension."
Edwards is very interested in completing the search and hire for the position he vacated as he accepted the Department leadership role- Small Grains Specialist. He tells Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays that "we've got a couple of candidates coming in after the first of the year to interview for that position- top notch candidates- and I'm really excited about the potential there." He adds that he hopes to have someone in the Small Grains Specialist position by early spring.
On the website, Edwards says of PASS- "The Plant and Soil Sciences Department at Oklahoma State University is an exciting place to study and work. Our faculty and staff are committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research, and extension. We offer a comprehensive educational experience for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in trying to solve some of the world's most pressing needs with respect to food, feed, fiber, and fuel."
Dr. Edwards also talked with Hays about what he sees for the Department going forward. He says the Department and the degrees it offers should be considered by students looking to attend OSU. Edwards says that "employers are wanting our graduates" and that for a prospective student- there is a significant amount of scholarship money to help with the expenses of University life.
In the world of research and extension- Dr. Edwards says that the Department has several great areas of emphasis- Soil Fertility, Wheat Improvement and Turfgrass are great examples of how PASS is doing cutting edge research and getting that information out to farmers through Extension.
