Wed, 30 Mar 2016 15:59:26 CDT
Noble Academy, Oklahoma State University Agricultural Education program and CareerTech Agricultural Education division are pleased to offer the first Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) Institute in Oklahoma.
The CASE Principles of Agricultural Science Plant (ASP) Institute will be June 19-29, 2016 at the Southern Oklahoma Technology Center in Ardmore, Okla. CASE Principles of Agricultural Science Plant is a foundation-level course for agricultural educators that will teach the form and function of plant systems. CASE Institute students are immersed in inquiry-based exercises filled with activities, projects and problems to teach them plant concepts through laboratory and practical experiences.
"Noble Academy's main focus is connecting science and agriculture in and out of the classroom," said Frank Hardin, Ph.D., Noble Academy education and outreach manager. "We want to equip agriculture teachers with the knowledge and confidence to take scientific, hands-on learning experiences into their classrooms. CASE provides that support to the teachers. Being a scientist and CASE-certified, I knew this was a great way to tie science into agriculture."
CASE is a national instructional system currently offered in 21 states that provides intense teacher professional development and curriculum that is changing the culture of agriculture programs. Through its system of professional development, curriculum, assessment and certification, CASE equips teachers to elevate student experiences in the agriculture classroom and prepares students for success in college and careers emphasizing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
"Agricultural educators recognize the important role of STEM in agriculture, but need support in highlighting STEM concepts in the existing curriculum," said Marshall Baker, Ph.D., Oklahoma State University agricultural education assistant professor.
To obtain the CASE curriculum, teachers are required to attend an 80-hour concurrent session CASE Institute. This professional development workshop equips teachers to use the curriculum to its fullest potential by preparing them to lead students through a series of meaningful and sequential activities, problems and projects couched in agricultural subject matter.
Registration is $2,750 per person and includes all the training materials, access to laboratory equipment, lodging and meals. The deadline to register is May 1, 2016. Twelve of the 18 openings available to attendees are reserved for Oklahoma educators. Additionally, 12 scholarships are available for Oklahoma educators. The application deadline is March 31, and recipients will be contacted by April 8.
