NCFC President Chuck Conner Calls Cloture an Important Milestone for GMO Labeling
Wed, 06 Jul 2016 16:42:34 CDT
Chuck Conner, president of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, released the following statement in reference to the cloture vote on the Roberts-Stabenow GMO labeling bill taken today:
"The Senate's action today invoking cloture on S. 764, the legislation authored by Senators Pat Roberts and Debbie Stabenow establishing a uniform national food disclosure standard for foods containing biotech ingredients, is an important milestone in seeing this bill move forward in the legislative process. The bill will ensure that consumers have access to more information than ever before about the food they eat while preserving important tools for farmers to produce the crops needed to feed a growing world.
"Senators Roberts and Stabenow have shown tremendous leadership in both crafting this legislation and shepherding through to the vote today and they should be applauded for their efforts on behalf of farmers, co-ops and consumers. We hope that once the Senate takes a final vote on the measure that the House will take it up and pass it-and that the President will sign it-before Congress goes into recess for the party conventions."
