Small But Steady Increases Across the Board in National Crop Progress Reports

The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture crop progress report rates 21 percent of the national corn crop in excellent condition, 54 percent in good condition, 18 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor. National soybean conditions include 18 percent excellent, 54 percent good, 21 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor. The national grain sorghum condition is 13 percent excellent, 52 percent good, 28 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor. National cotton conditions include 8 percent excellent, 39 percent good, 35 percent fair, 14 percent poor and 4 percent very poor.

In the weekly crop progress report from USDA, Oklahoma corn dough reached 83 percent, up 8 points from the previous year and down 4 points from normal. Corn dent reached 50 percent, up 2 points from the previous year but down 13 points from normal. Sorghum headed reached 85 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 11 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 45 percent, up 5 points from the previous year and up 5 points from normal. Soybeans blooming reached 66 percent, down 5 points from the previous year but down 11 points from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 50 percent, down 1 point from the previous year but up 5 points from normal. Cotton setting bolls reached 72 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 3 points from normal. Cotton bolls opening reached 4 percent, up 2 points from the previous year and unchanged from normal.

Corn and sorghum harvest near completion while cotton harvest was delayed due to rainfall in areas of Texas this past week. Corn harvest was 47 percent complete, 9 points higher than last week but 2 points higher than normal. Mature corn reached 57 percent, 3 points higher than normal. Sorghum harvest was 46 percent complete, just 1 point higher than last week and 3 points below normal. Across the state, sorghum was 68 percent mature, which is 2 points lower than the five-year average. Soybeans were 80 percent setting pods, which is 2 points lower the 5-year average. Soybeans dropping leaves were at 39 percent, 9 points higher than normal. Cotton harvest was at 4 percent, 3 points higher than normal. Cotton bolls opened were at 17 percent, right on par with the 5-year average.

In the weekly crop progress report from USDA, Kansas corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 6 poor, 25 fair, 57 good, and 11 excellent. Corn dough was 78 percent, near 84 last year, and near 86 average. Dented was 51 percent, near 47 last year and 49 average. Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 29 fair, 56 good, and 9 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 93 percent, near 90 last year, and near 91 average. Setting pods was 71 percent, near 68 last year, and near 67 average. Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 22 fair, 60 good, and 14 excellent. Sorghum headed was 90 percent, near 86 last year, and ahead of 75 average. Coloring was 32 percent, ahead of 25 last year, and ahead of 18 average.
