Oklahoma Congressman Tom Cole Reacts to President Biden's SOTU

Wed, 08 Feb 2023 05:09:18 CST

Oklahoma Congressman Tom Cole Reacts to President Biden's SOTU Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address given to a joint session of Congress this evening.

“This evening as our nation faces several mounting and worsening crises, President Joe Biden delivered his annual State of the Union Address in which he was expected to discuss the issues Americans care about most. Sadly, instead of offering solutions, he doubled down on his and Democrats’ disastrous and failed agenda that has caused crisis after crisis in the first place. The state of our union has been on shaky ground for several years, and instead of addressing this, unfortunately the president used his address for more deflection.

“President Biden and Democrats that were in control of Congress the past two years have run amok with our nation’s economy. Their spending, Green New Deal policies and high-tax plans have caused prices on just about everything to skyrocket, and Americans are severely struggling financially. While Americans pay more than double the amount for a carton of eggs, inflation is certainly the most important issue to them, and I was disappointed the president proposed more spending and policies that will not help. I hope this Congress, he will come to the table and work with Republicans on spending reforms that adequately address America’s debt ceiling and out of control national debt.

“The president also offered no solutions to his self-made historic humanitarian and national security crisis at the southern border. The open border has let in bad actors and unprecedented amounts of dangerous and deadly fentanyl. This is a crisis that can be addressed by finishing construction of the border wall, providing enough border patrol agents and equipping them with the necessary tools they need and working with Republicans on fair but just immigration reforms. This is a crisis that has gone on for too long and must be resolved soonest.

“This past week, a Chinese surveillance balloon was detected traveling from Alaska across the United States to the Atlantic Ocean. This incident certainly sheds a light on the Chinese Communist Party’s increasingly emboldened and aggressive stance on the global stage. President Biden and his administration must answer questions on this blatant failure to promptly detect and take down this spy machine. I am disappointed that there was no mention of this failure in his speech, or no answers provided to the American people.

“Finally, the president failed to mention a plan to unleash North American energy production to solve his self-created energy crisis. The president inherited a nation that was self-reliant and almost entirely energy independent. Because of his anti-American energy policies and assault on production here at home, energy prices are the highest they ever have been, severely hurting Americans’ wallets. President Biden must also stop playing games with our Strategic Petroleum Reserve that is meant for the sole purpose of a natural disaster or national emergency. The Biden administration’s decision to drain this has left our nation in a vulnerable position and in the hands of other countries that do not have our best interests in mind.

“Furthermore, as transportation and infrastructure continues to be a priority for this president, in my new role as Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development, I hope he and I can work together in good faith to find bipartisan solutions to our nation’s infrastructure needs.

“The president cannot run the country the next two year the way he has the last, and this will be a very telling year for the president, indeed. Because Republicans assumed majority in the House of Republicans, the American people will surely see if he will keep his campaign promise to be a bipartisan president who works with both parties.
