US Beef Tongue is a BIG Deal in Japan- Dan Halstrom of USMEF Talks With Ron Hays
Tue, 17 Sep 2019 09:24:14 CDTBeef Tongue is a BIG deal in Japan- and they love Beef Tongue from the US. Dan Halstrom, CEO and President of the US Meat Export Federation talked with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays about the unique love affair that the Japanese public has with Beef Tongue- especially in and around the city of Sendai.
Sendai is a city located northeast of Tokyo that is especially well-known for its appetite for U.S. beef tongue. A group of US producers that were a part of the recent Heartland Team that traveled to Japan had the chance to tour a beef tongue processing plant in Sendai. The group also attended a dinner with food industry representatives who are members of the Sendai Beef Tongue Association. With the U.S. and Japan having reached an agreement in principle on red meat trade, Japanese buyers are excited at the prospect of obtaining U.S. beef tongue at a lower tariff rate. Japan's tariff rate on U.S. beef tongue is currently 12.8%, but just 5.7% for countries in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
