House Floor Farm Bill Debate- Crop Insurance
Thu, 20 Jun 2013 05:08:50 CDTOne of critical debates on the floor of the US House as members consider the five year farm bill of 2013 was over crop insurance. Wisconsin Democrat Ron Kind offered an amendment that would attach multiple strings to crop insurance, including the limitation of premium subsidies for crop insurance to $50,000 per operator, an elimination of any premium subsidy being allowed to producers who have an AGI of more than $250,000 and would restrict rate of return levels to 12% maximum for companies selling crop insurance using the federal subsidies.
A strong defense was offered for crop insurance being left alone by several members of the House Ag Committee, including the Chairman and the ranking member of the Committee. The audio here is of the entire twenty minute debate between Ron Kind and his supporters and Chairman Frank Lucas and those who spoke in support of crop insurance as the key component in today's risk management efforts for farmers.
