Oklahoma FFA Convention Update- Prepared Speech and Parli Pro Championships

Oklahoma FFA Convention Update- Prepared Speech and Parli Pro Championships Here's an update of what we know to this point about the competitions that Oklahoma FFA members have been involved in as of Friday evening.

First of all, the National Prepared Public Speaking Contest has been won by an Oklahoma FFA member for the fifth year in a row. Tyler Schnaithman of Garber won with a speak defending modern production agriculture- we talked with Tyler after the Finals of the contest and we have the audio of that conversation and a link to the speech he gave in Louisville- Click here for that.

We also learned that the Kingfisher FFA has won the National Parliamentary Procedure Contest- which means an Oklahoma team has captured this high profile team contest for perhaps the first time ever. Congrats to Lori Burns and her Parli Pro team! Still out is the final placing for the Kingfisher FFA Ag Issues team- they were in the Final Four in Louisville with their presentation on Wind Energy controversies in their county. We have pictures included in our set of National FFA Convention photos on FLICKR- Click here for that.

Two team results that we do have thus far-

The Stillwater FFA Chapter's Ag Communications team placed second nationally in that contest in Louisville. Team members include Jacob Sitton, Adrienne Blakey and Olivia Cornforth. Placing just ahead of Stillwater was the team from Kansas.

The Alva FFA Chapter represented Oklahoma in the National FFA Livestock Judging contest- placing fourth nationally this week. Winning the overall contest was Wyoming.

Oklahoma advanced and brought to Louisville 20 National Proficiency Finalists out of the 49, which was the third most Finalists behind Georgia and California. By the end of the afternoon on Friday, Oklahoma had claimed 7 National Profiency Titles, the most of any state. Ohio was second with six National Proficiency titles and Georgia was third with five. In 2012, Oklahoma FFA members earned 8 National Proficiency Awards. Three of the 2013 Proficiency award winners from Oklahoma are repeat national award winners from 2012. The picture here is of two time Proficiency Award winner Garrett Yerigan of Pryor.

Farm Director Ron Hays talked with all seven Oklahoma Proficiency Award winners- we will be posting all of their stories Saturday morning on our APP and on our website in the Blue Green Gazette section

More results will be available Saturday.

Still to come on Saturday as well- the announcement of the six national officers for 2013-2014. Click here for our earlier conversation with Brandon Baumgarten as he waits to hear his name called.

Our exclusive coverage from the 2013 National FFA Convention in Louisville is a service of the Oklahoma FFA Association and the Oklahoma FFA Alumni Association. Click here for more information about this youth organization. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
